Technologists with a thorough understanding of the influential factors for high-quality ink-jet prints have been able to create a category of novel special starches. These products may be tailored to specific applications, i.e. for use as surface sizes or binders in pigmentized coating colors.
By combining those starches with a PCC having a very small particle size and a high specific surface, it is possible to design novel formulations. When applied onto base papers suitable for the different coating techniques those formulations can lead to a broad range of novel ink-jet papers. The quality of the printouts are either comparable or superior to those obtained using conventional Silicate-PVOH formulations. Depending on the coating techniques and calendering conditions matte or high glossy surfaces can be created without detrimental effects on microporosity. This pigment/binder combination thus allows the paper industry to satisfy exacting quality demands at low cost.
