Spoilage Problems in Papermaking Systems, 2003 Spring Technical Conference Proceedings

The deep chests and long dwell times in papermaking systems provide ideal conditions for the growth of anaerobic bacteria that cause spoilage. Anaerobes can cause problems in the absence of visible deposits on machine surfaces. Spoilage by these organisms causes odor in the finished paper and, at times, community complaints from people residing near the papermill. More seriously, anaerobic growth in paper systems has caused capital equipment damage, downtime, injuries and several fatalities. Problems with anaerobes have intensified as the industry has increased water system closure and the use of recycled fiber. Three mill case studies will be presented that provide information on how anaerobic growth and activity can impact the papermaking process. Solutions to anaerobe problems can include chemical application and/or mechanical changes. Since every mill is different, correcting a spoilage problem requires on-site analysis and problem solving.
