Practical Experience with Biocide Tolerant/Resistant Microorganisms in Kaolin Slurry, 2003 Spring Technical Conference Proceedings
Inadequate microbiological control (MB) in kaolin slurry will cause one or more of the following problems: odor, deterioration of viscosity, discoloration and brightness loss. Oxidants and nonoxidizing biocides are typically used for control during processing, storage and shipment. Ineffectiveness of MB control chemicals can be due to many causes with a significant one being the development of tolerance/resistance to biocides. MB testing, e.g., standard plate agar, is typically used to measure the effectiveness of a biocide or oxidant against a particular MB
population. However, these techniques are not adequate to fully understand reasons for biocide
or oxidant ineffectiveness. This article depicts examples of several analytical techniques used to
better understand and solve MB control problems that occur in biocide and/or oxidant-treated
kaolin slurry.
