Pressure forming has been used for the manufacture of paperboard grades for many years. Pressure forming, which can be considered the use of a type of hydraulic flow box which incorporates some preforming, is described. Details are given of recent studies including the history of the development of a new pressure former know as the Newport/Attwood former.
This equipment is described together with information of a recent application for the manufacture of gypsum board using an under felt configuration. The aforementioned can also be used in an on-top configuration and can incorporate twin wire concepts. Details of these arrangements and possible applications are presented. Further developments of the process using pilot plant facilities are being carried out, the details of which are described together with indications of future trends.
