A common problem in obtaining good consistency control is a lack of guidelines in consistency transmitter calibration. Often times, a consistency transmitter’s calibration is changed every time the output does not agree with the lab sample results. This practice increases the amount of time spent calibrating consistency transmitters while decreasing the accuracy of the consistency measurement. By establishing a sample-calibration system, a mill can reverse this trend and improve its consistency measurement and control.
To create a good sample-calibration system, standardized procedures must be set for sampling procedure, sample documentation, and sample history evaluation. All the departments involved in the process, such as instrument technicians, lab technicians, and operators, should be familiar with all the standardized procedures. Depending on the frequency of samples, it will take some time to collect enough data to properly evaluate a consistency transmitter’s calibration. But once the data is collected, the accuracy of the evaluation and the calibration adjustment will improve.
