Tissue Mill Performance of a Brominated Methylethylhydantoin Slimicide, 2002 Technology Summit Proceedings

E. G. Knapick, L. S. Anker, K. E. Knauer & K. W. Pidane

Increased efficiency, quality, and safety requirements have made the selection of a cost-effective biocide program critical to mill performance and profitability. Experience at a tissue mill has shown that, under certain conditions, oxidizing biocides outperform organic biocides in controlling biological growth and product odor. Conventional oxidizing biocides such as bromine are effective; however, they also present a number of application issues. Laboratory testing has shown a novel brominated 5,5-methylethylhydantoin (BrMEH) provided enhanced white water efficacy compared to other oxidizing alternatives.

An extensive survey of a mid-Atlantic tissue mill resulted in numerous process recommendations, including an extended BrMEH trial. These trials demonstrated the many advantages of BrMEH. BrMEH effectively controlled aerobic and sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) populations while maintaining machine cleanliness and product quality. Additionally, improvements in operator safety and equipment reliability were realized. Data generated through monitoring the tissue machine and the deink plant trials are presented.
