Effect of Dryer Fabric Tension on Drying Rate, 2002 Technology Summit Proceedings

Ian Lang

Dryer fabric tension is one factor having an important effect on dryer section capacity. It is frequently the subject of debate, yet information in industry journals and standards on recommended tensions is limited. Tests with three different paper grades were carried out on a lab scale drying apparatus simulating industrial conditions. Field trials were carried out on one paper machine to provide confirmation of the lab results. The tests show that a significant improvement in drying capacity can be achieved by operating at higher fabric tensions than commonly used in the industry.
