SetPoint: In The Bottom Line on the Bottom Line, Paper360º May/June 2025
You’ve probably heard the expression, “ ... but what does that have to do with the price of
eggs?” It’s what people say when a subject of conversation seems irrelevant to the bigger issue. It implies
that it doesn’t matter whether you’d like to talk about something more interesting; there is nothing more
important than cost. “The price of eggs” is just a metaphor for the price of ... everything. And if we are not
saving money, we’re wasting our time.
In manufacturing—especially in capital-intensive arenas like pulp, paper, and packaging—it makes sense
that the bottom line is a top priority. That is why we decided to devote the “Trendspotting” section of this
issue to energy savings. Energy makes up a huge portion of total manufacturing costs: up to 40 percent at
some locations. Even a small change can make a noticeable difference on that all-important bottom line,
especially in larger facilities or across a network of mills. There’s not a mill in operation that can afford to
pass up the opportunity to reduce spending on energy.
